Safe zones for TikTok, Shorts and Reels
On a 1080 x 1920 vertical video, keep text, faces and logos out of these margins:
- TikTok:
- 240 px at the top, 660 px at the bottom, 120 px on each side, and a 180 px button column on the right from 840 px down.
- YouTube Shorts:
- 288 px at the top, 672 px at the bottom, 48 px on the left and 192 px on the right.
- Instagram Reels and Facebook Reels:
- 269 px at the top, 672 px at the bottom, 65 px on each side (Meta's 14% top, 35% bottom and 6% on each side).
These are the figures each platform publishes for ads. Regular posts cover a little less at the bottom, so the same margins are the safe choice for both.
Add a frame and anything with sharp detail, like text or a face, that sits in a covered part is marked in red.

16:9 safe zones: title safe and action safe
For horizontal 1920 x 1080 (16:9) video, the broadcast standard SMPTE ST 2046-1 sets title safe at 90% of the frame (1728 x 972, 96 px in from each side and 54 px from the top and bottom) and action safe at 93% (1786 x 1004, 67 px and 38 px). Keep titles and captions inside title safe and anything important inside action safe. Google publishes a horizontal safe zone only for video ads, whose own buttons cover the lower part of the frame.
| Area | Share | Size | Each side | Top and bottom |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Title safe | 90% | 1728 x 972 | 96 px | 54 px |
| Action safe | 93% | 1786 x 1004 | 67 px | 38 px |
How to check a short
- Export a frame of your short at 1080 x 1920, or use the video file itself.
- Drop it on the checker, paste it, or choose the file. It stays in your browser.
- Turn on the apps you post to. The shaded parts are what they cover.
- Move anything marked in red into the clear box, or download a template and line it up in your editor.

Questions
- What is the YouTube Shorts safe zone?
- On 1080 x 1920: 288 px at the top, 672 px at the bottom, 48 px on the left and 192 px on the right. Those are the margins in Google's guide to vertical video ads, which run in Shorts, and the only pixel figures Google publishes for Shorts. The title, channel name and subscribe button sit in the bottom margin, and the like, comment and share buttons run down the right.
- What is the TikTok safe zone?
- On 1080 x 1920: 240 px at the top, 660 px at the bottom, 120 px on each side, and a 180 px button column on the right from 840 px down. TikTok draws its In-Feed safe zone at 720 x 1280; these are the same margins at 1080 x 1920. TikTok notes that a longer caption covers more of the bottom.
- What is the safe zone for Instagram Reels and Facebook Reels?
- Meta asks you to leave about 14% top, 35% bottom and 6% on each side free of text, logos and other key elements, for both Instagram Reels and Facebook Reels. On 1080 x 1920 that is 269 px at the top, 672 px at the bottom, 65 px on each side.
- What are the safe zones for 16:9 video?
- Title safe is 90% of the frame and action safe is 93%, both centred (SMPTE ST 2046-1). On 1920 x 1080 that is 1728 x 972 and 1786 x 1004. Older guides from the 4:3 era use 80% and 90%, which keeps more of the edge clear than a modern screen needs.
- Are these numbers for ads or for regular posts?
- The platforms publish pixel figures only for ads, where a call-to-action button and a longer caption sit at the bottom. A regular post covers a little less at the bottom, but the account name, caption and buttons still sit there, so the ad figures are the safe choice for both.
- Is my image or video uploaded?
- No. The checker reads the file in your browser and draws on it there. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.
- How do I use a safe zone template?
- Download the PNG for your app, put it on a track above your video in your editor at 1080 x 1920, and line up your captions and graphics inside the clear box. Hide the track before you export.
